From Diaper to Disaster? Let’s Rethink Baby Care

Did you know that producing just one disposable diaper consumes about one cup of crude oil? Now imagine that repeated 4,500 times — because that’s the average number of diapers used by one baby from birth to potty training. In total, that’s around 1,400 liters of oil, or the equivalent of 9 full barrels, used just to manage one child’s hygiene. And this doesn’t even count the water, energy, and emissions required for manufacturing and transporting them.

But the impact doesn’t stop there. In countries like Germany, used diapers are typically not recycled or composted. Instead, they are incinerated, a process that releases greenhouse gases and destroys valuable organic nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus — nutrients that are crucial for healthy soils and food production. In places without incineration facilities, diapers often end up in landfills, where they remain for centuries, releasing microplastics and toxic substances into soil, water, and ecosystems. We’re burning what could nourish the earth, and dumping what could be transformed into life.

At DYCLE, we believe it’s time to rewrite this story. What if a baby’s diaper, instead of being a symbol of pollution, ould become a source of fertility and renewal? Our system is built on that very idea. We offer 100% compostable, plant-based diaper inlays made from natural fibers such as hemp and wood pulp, sourced from regional agriculture. These inlays are free from chemicals, breathable, and gentle on a baby’s skin.

Once used, the inlays are collected in an odor-free way, using a special activated biochar mix that prevents bad smells and supports hygienic storage. From there, the inlays are transformed into Terra Preta — a rich, living soil substrate inspired by ancient Amazonian farming methods. This soil stores carbon for the long term, rebuilds degraded land, and provides the foundation for healthy ecosystems.

The result? One baby using the DYCLE system can help produce up to 1,000 liters of fertile soil, enough to nourish community gardens, plant fruit and nut trees, or regenerate urban green spaces. Parents become part of a cycle that starts with care and ends with growth. What was once a waste stream becomes a gift to the future.

This isn’t just about diapers. It’s about designing systems that work with nature, not against it. It’s about empowering families to make choices that benefit their children and the planet at the same time.

Let’s make the change, together. For our babies. For our soil. For the planet.
